McCain Foods is accepting applications for a Environmental Engineer Trainee position, to work at the Othello, Washington plant. Under the direction of the first level manager Environmental Control Supervisor and the second level manager the Plant Engineering Manager, this position is entry-level training to develop practical proficiency in environmental engineering.

 

An employee in this job participates in a formal and on-the-job training program in environmental engineering under the direction of the Environmental Supervisor. Work is assigned in a planning, design, construction, regulatory, conservation or resource management program area, such as wastewater treatment, water supply, air quality, waste management, environmental cleanup, oil and gas management, and erosion and sediment control.

 

Accountabilities:

  • Strict adherence to all safety-related policies, rules, and regulations, along with the McCain Code of Conduct.
  • Operate and maintain all Wastewater Treatment equipment: which includes operation of a Covered Anaerobic Lagoon (CAL), waste collection systems, rotary screens, clarifier, aeration basin, biogas collection and distribution systems, and ancillary equipment.
  • Assists in completing or reviewing plan and permit applications involving the treatment, discharge, disposal, remediation or minimization of wastes, hazardous materials or other pollutants in air, water or soil.
  • Lead the Wastewater Treatment Operators by providing guidance and corrective measures to the biological treatment process.
  • Assist Wastewater Treatment Operators and Environmental Control Supervisor in achieving the following goals:
    • Efficient operation of the Anaerobic Digestion process
    • Identification of potential process upsets and ensure corrective measure are made
    • Review all water analysis results from Wastewater Treatment Operators, for accuracy, and approve any adjustments to the process that is required.
    • Optimization of biogas generation and distribution of quality gas to the boiler
    • Monitoring final effluent quality and distribution to irrigation holding pond
    • Includes the ability to perform the testing procedures, math calculations and system adjustments
  • Complies with all state regulations that pertain to:
    • State of Washington Waste Water Permit
    • McCain compliance requirements and recordkeeping
  • Assists in developing regulations, policies, procedures, standards and guidance documents with environmental engineering components.
  • Assists in the calculation of potential and actual air pollution contamination rates.
  • Assists in studying treatment processes and control technology in order to evaluate pollution potential and control equipment effectiveness.
  • Adhere to strict safety policies while operating a biological wastewater treatment system program, and strict adherence to biogas production safety measures.
  • Calibrate Wastewater Treatment laboratory instruments
  • Actively troubleshoot biological treatment system upsets, with the goal to minimize upsets that can halt the biological treatment activity
  • Network with other members of the Maintenance team to ensure they are made aware of necessary repairs and their timeframe for completion.
  • Work closely with Production supervision to inform them of corrections needed within the Production process generating waste and system upsets that may interrupt plant production.
  • Maintain compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices, promote Environmental Awareness and energy/water conservation.

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering
  • Must be able to demonstrate a sustained passion and interest in Environmental Sustainability and State regulations.
  • Experience and/or education related to the wastewater treatment biological process
  • Demonstrated ability to work on a variety of unrelated projects with a results-focused orientation, to think logically, and to have well-developed problem-solving/troubleshooting skills.
  • Proficient computer skills in programs such as MS Office
  • Familiarity with the use of a structured CMMS, such as SAP PM.
  • Ability to report the status of activities, in a written and verbal manner on a daily basis
  • Preferred: Knowledgeable of operation of an anaerobic digestion system
  • Preferred: 1+ years as a front-line people leader
  • Preferred: Experience working in a food manufacturing environment, and complying with food safety rules

  • Lead and guide operators in optimizing biological treatment processes, identifying and correcting system upsets, and ensuring proper effluent quality.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure compliance with state regulations, including the Washington Wastewater Permit, environmental recordkeeping, and adherence to company standards.
  • Lab Instrument Calibration: Calibrate wastewater treatment laboratory instruments and perform associated testing and math calculations.
  • Environmental and Pollution Control: Assist in developing environmental policies and evaluating control technologies for pollution reduction and compliance .

Compensation Package $77,968.80 - $85,000  USD annually + bonus eligibility 

 

The above reflects the target compensation range for the position at the time of posting. Hiring compensation will be determined based on experience, skill set, education/training, and other organizational needs.
